Tonight we had the pleasure of attending a family-friendly event at Island Evangelical Community Church. We were transported back in time to when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
After registering for the "family census", Jemilla, Keegan and Tirzah listened to a story from a convincing shepherd.
At the Pottery Shop they made a clay bowl.
At the Carpentry Shop they sanded and painted a wooden toy top.
At the Scribe Shop they wrote on parchment paper with a real stylus and ink, then sealed their scroll with a wax seal.
At the Bakery Shop they decorated and promptly ate Christmas cookies.
There was a Craft Shop and Bake Sale where we could purchase items to raise funds for Global Outreach.
Then it was time to visit the stable to find Baby Jesus.
We found Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus...the latter whom we actually heard before we saw him.
He was rather hungry... and rather Asian...and extremely cute!
So our photo in the stable is of a Chinese Baby Jesus being fed some milk from a bottle by Joseph.
No wonder Tirzah was confused!
Our children were given a little wooden nativity figurine for each craft they completed.
The whole "Night in Bethlehem" event was extremely well-organised, and we had a lot of fun. Thank you to all the church volunteers for this entertaining way of introducing local families to the real meaning of Christmas.
And if you happen to be a reader living in Perth, you can avoid the usual Christmas hype and attend a similar event yourself from December 13-15 from 7.00pm - 9.00pm at the corner of Ranford and Nicholson Roads, Canning Vale. We loved doing the "Road to Bethlehem" every year in Perth, especially riding on the camels. Just watch out for the Roman soldiers...they can be a bit scary!
