The Reason for the Season is... Pokemon?

If your children complain about their school holidays being too short you can tell them that the Chinese schools hardly have a vacation at all during this time of year. Only December 25th is considered a public holiday.

During this month here in Hong Kong we have seen many commercial Christmas decorations and signs which reflect a cultural interest in the Western customs of Christmas. Although most individuals here would not consider themselves Christians, they celebrate Christmas-like festivities similar to ours such as sending cards, exchanging gifts, and decorating Christmas trees. Call me cynical but I would say that mostly the festivities are results of clever retail marketing campaigns, as was the case with our kids' carol singing events.

I'll post some pictures of the Christmassy things we've spied around town, but my heart feels sad that all the millions of people here have most likely missed the true reason why we celebrate.

More carols

In late November our children performed Christmas carols for the lighting ceremony of a huge Christmas tree at the prestigious 1881 Heritage building in Tsim Sha Tsui. This is the scene in the day time.

This week Jemilla and Keegan had three more nights to rehearse and sing in front of crowds as a means of attracting more people to this upmarket shopping district.

We also saw several actors wearing period costumes, and Jemilla was happy to pose with these two lovely ladies.

I have to say that it made me slightly uncomfortable to see so many people taking photos and videos of our children.Yes, they are white. Yes, they look adorable. But what's the big deal?

A tale of two parties

Yesterday we attended the birthday party of Tirzah's friend Daniel from church. I was struck by the contrast between this party and another we attended a few weeks ago. You'll see what I mean from the photos below.

Daniel's party was held in the soccer field next to their village house. Most of the people who attended were Filipino friends of the family. We played some simple games like "Pop the balloon"...

"How many people can fit into a hula hoop?"

"Egg and spoon races"...

And "The lolly man"...

...who was tackled and stripped bare within seconds.

The food was homemade and delicious.

Here's Daniel with his cake.

Now when Keegan's classmate Sophie turned five, her party was a lavish event held in the beautifully decorated clubhouse of her estate.

Entertainment for the fifty or more children at the party consisted of body tattoos...

A treasure hunt...

A magic show...

And a clown who made balloon animals...

There was an abundance of rich party food.

And Sophie's cake was every girl's dream design.

I asked Jemilla and Keegan which party they preferred, Daniel's or Sophie's. They answered that they liked different things about each event.

I should have told them to enjoy Sophie's party extravaganza while they could because they are far more likely to have Daniel's minimalist party given for them during their childhood.

Just in case you were planning to take your roast pig on the train...

Christmas Concert

Last night Craig and I had the pleasure of attending the Norwegian International School's Christmas concert. The three kindergarten classes performed first. Keegan's class did a beautiful dance while singing in Chinese.

Then they amazed the audience with their lovely handbells performances.

Jemilla's class sang "Christmas is a time to love".

Christmas is a Time
by Ernie Rettino and Debby Kerner

Christmas is a time,
Christmas is a time,
Christmas is a time to love.

We often start to worry,
and people get upset,
if things don't all go right on Christmas Day.

What we should remember
in all the push and shove
is Christmas is a time to love.

May be things don't sound right,
or look the way they should,
and may be they're not perfectly in tune.

It really doesn't matter,
let's keep our eyes above,
'cause Christmas is a time to love.

Grade Two then did some short skits pretending to be door-to-door carollers.

The concert program stated, "Many things have been added to Christmas so that we have crowded out its true meaning." Through their skits and songs NIS students reminded everyone what this special season is really all about...the birth of Jesus.

The last number was "Christmas isn't Christmas."

Christmas Isn’t Christmas
by Jimmy Carol Owens

Christmas Isn’t Christmas
'till it happens in your heart,
Somewhere deep inside you
Is where Christmas really starts;

So give your heart to Jesus,
you'll discover when you do
That it’s Christmas
Really Christmas for you.

Jesus brings warmth like a winter fire,
A light like a candle's glow;
He's waiting now to come inside
As He did so long ago.

Jesus brings gifts of truth and life
And makes them bloom and grow.
So welcome Him with a song of joy
And when He comes you'll know ..... that ...

Christmas Isn’t Christmas
'till it happens in your heart,
Somewhere deep inside you
Is where Christmas really starts;

So give your heart to Jesus,
you'll discover when you do
That it’s Christmas
Really Christmas for you.
