TVs galore (by Craig)

As you can imagine in this land of technology, there are televisions EVERYWHERE. Jemilla especially likes this aspect of living in Hong Kong. She loves to watch the public televisions, regardless of the fact they solely show news or commercials and are entirely in Chinese.

Shopping centres have enormous screens...

You can see they have replaced many billboards on the street.

TVs are on the trains...

And on the buses...

Heaven forbid you should get bored while waiting for the lifts!

The other day I went to the bank to pay the monthly rent. (Setting up online banking in HK is such a hassle. I can’t just send money to whichever account I choose on-line. I need permission from the recipient via bank paperwork first.) Anyway, I thought it was cool how at the bank solar powered calculators were impressed and affixed adjacent to every pen station spot to help customers add up the cheques they are depositing. Then I hopped into a taxi to go back to work and saw something that I hadn’t seen here before: a small flat screen TV running advert after advert, plus occasional weather details. It also apparently had a built-in GPS tracker so when we drove past or approached a McDonalds restaurant for example a McDonalds ad came up.

Pretty cool, huh?

  1. Makes me think about those built-in DVD-players on prams...
